Son of John Bateman and Sarah Ann (nee) Bailey. Born 1920 in Bromley area.
HMS Duchess sank on 12th December 1939 after being in collision with HMS Barham 9 miles off The Mull of Kintyre. 129 of the crew died either on the ship or from drowning, only 23 survived. An account by a survivor of the tragedy is on HMS Barham's site.
